Louis W. Collins

Louis W. "Louie" Collins, 92, of 118 Lakeview Avenue, Jamestown, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 1983, in his home.

He was the proprietor of Collins Sport Shop, which he operated from 1914 until its sale in 1960.

A life-long Jamestown resident, he was born December 4, 1890, a son of John B. and Mary Powers Collins.

He was a graduate of Jamestown High School, and was captain of its undefeated, once-tied, football team. He had been active in his earlier years in both football and basketball.

Collins was instrumental in the organization of the Chautauqua County Baseball Association and the organization of the MUNY Class A, B, C and D baseball leagues.

Collins was a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose, and was cited for signing up 250 new members. He was also a member of the YMCA and received many membership awards.

He was a communicant of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, United Commercial Travelers and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Elizabeth Collins, with whom he resided. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Maie and Marguerite Collins, and Gertrude Sundeen; and four brothers: Frank, Harry, Richard and John Collins.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in Lind Funeral Home, where vigil prayers will be led at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
