Trojan Bears Qualify For States
Bruce Johnson has been coaching boys swimming for 45 years.
Never has he sent a boys relay team to a New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
He will this year.
The Frewsburg/Southwestern 200-yard freestyle relay team reached a state-qualifying time of 1:29.44 en route to winning Tuesday as the Trojan Bears beat Panama/Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake 122-48 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association boys swimming and diving Tuesday evening at Southwestern Elementary School.
Frewsburg/Southwestern kept Gannon Moore, Grady Moore, Miles Moore and Brady Lindstrom out of individual events so they could swim in all three relays.
It paid off.
The 200-yard freestyle relay time broke the school record set in 2014 and the pool record set in 2013.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the quartet finished in 3:24.72 to break the pool record set in 2014.
The foursome kicked the evening off with a winning time of 1:41.86 in the 200-yard medley relay to break the school record set last year and the pool record set in 2009.
Micah Barber was a double winner for Frewsburg/Southwestern, capturing the 50-yard freestyle in 24.22 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.94.
Logan Hren also won two events: the 200-yard individual medley in 2:15.92 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.84.

West Seneca beat Jamestown/Falconer 93-63 in Erie County Interscholastic Conference boys swimming and diving at Jamestown High School.
Conner Dean and Aidan McCleery were double winners for Jamestown/Falconer.
Dean captured the 50-yard freestyle (24.24) and 100-yard freestyle (54.08), while McCleery claimed the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.02) and 100-yard backstroke (1:07.33).

FRED QUALIFIES FOR STATES
DUNKIRK — Adam Fred hit a New York State Public High School Athletic Association-qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle, but Dunkirk/Fredonia/Forestville fell to Olean/Allegany-Limestone/Franklinville 102-62 at Dunkirk High School.
Fred, celebrating Senior Night, swam a school-record time of 21.89 seconds to win the 50-yard freestyle and then won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.86 seconds to reestablish his school record and miss a state-qualifying time by four-hundredths of a second.
D/F/F’s Riley Smith-Mallon had a personal best in the 200-yard individual medley by almost 40 seconds, Trenton Krenzer swam personal bests in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, and Matt Dunn swam a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke.
