AU’s Ron Frederes Names ICAC’s Coach of the Year

ALFRED – Alfred University’s Ron Frederes was named the 1984-85 Independent Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for basketball.

Alfred compiled a 17-11 record this year, winning the ICAC in a playoff game against St. Lawrence. After defeating the Larries, AU received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, the first-ever bid by a Saxon basketball team.

In addition to Frederess award, three Saxons earned All-Conference selections.

Hornell’s Brian Andrews was a unanimous first-team guard pick. He is joined on the first unit by teammate Mike Wing.

Andrews, a sophomore, led the conference in free throw percentage and ranked in the top five nationally in this category. He led the Saxons in assists and finished tied with Wing as the leading AU scorers.

Wing, also a sophomore, was the leading rebounder for AU in addition to his scoring.

Paul Amrose of Alfred received an All-Conference second team berth. Amrose is a junior forward for the Saxons.

When asked about the Coach of the Year award, a hesitant Frederes replied, “The award is a tribute to the kids. I’m riding in on their coattails.”
