Chautauqua Burning Up Local Tracks

Lack Of Own Facility Doesn’t Stall Efforts

Don’t blink now or you just might miss a member of the Chautauqua Central School track team setting a new school record somewhere.

Both the boys and girls teams had tremendous weeks and are each sitting in first place in the Division 3 race.

The record-breaking week began last Monday when the boys’ 1,600 meter relay team, under Coach Cal Cederquist, broke the 1983 school mark of 3:44.7 by more than two seconds.

On the same day, the girls program, coached by Eileen Sheesley, broke five school records in a dual meet with Forestville.

New school marks were established in the 1,500 meters, the 400 meters, the discus, the triple jump and the 400-meter relay. Then Wednesday, with a meet against Pine Valley, three other girls records fell by the wayside.

Amanda Stapleton bettered her mark in the 1,500 meters while Connie Findley did the same in the 400. Kendra Corey set a new record in the 800-meter run.

Thursday, the boys team waltzed to a big win over Panama as Kevin Jones and Luke Brown were each triple-winners.

The bottom line: the Chautauqua track teams are dominating their respective divisions.

And it couldn’t come at a better time since this is the final season the school exists before the merger with Mayville.

The boy’s team is currently 2-0 in league meets while the girl’s team is also sitting on top with a 3-0 mark.

Stay tuned for another week of track and field when the Indians play Can You Top This?
