Frederick James “Jim” Hurst
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving four years. He had been employed by Niagara Mohawk for 40 years, retiring in 1988 as a line foreman. He was a member of the Sherman Community Church, the Olive Lodge 575 F&AM and the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Jamestown and the Acacia Chapter O.E.S. 96, where he had served as Past Patron.
He enjoyed playing and was a professional pocket billiards player and had put on many trick shot exhibitions throughout the area. He was also a licensed billiards instructor through the Billiards Congress of America.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Lookenhouse Hurst of Sherman, whom he married July 17, 1952; a son, Bryan Hurst of Sherman; two daughters, Karen Persons of Sherman and Brenda Carutis of Bemus Point: four grandchildren, Bill Persons of Sherman, Mitchell Carutis of Westfield, and Edward James III and Katie Carutis, both of Bemus Point; one great-granddaughter; four brothers, Milton Hurst of Jacksonville, Fla., Lawrence Hurst of Plantation, Fla., Albert Hurst of Lexington, Tenn., and Ernest Hurst of Sherman; two sisters, Vera Skinner of Charleston, S.C., and Hazel Halter of Sherman.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Lee M. Persons, who died Nov. 11, 1992; two brothers, Herbert Hurst, who died in 1952, and Kenneth Hurst, who died Sept. 30, 1988; and a sister, Orrissa Hewitt, who died in 1938.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday in the Sherman Community Church. The Rev. Thomas Price, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, where an Olive Lodge service will be held at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Stanley Hose Co., Sherman Community Church or a charity of choice.
The additional financial assistance of the community is critical to the success of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame.
