Sherwood W. Olson Is Dead;
Post-Journal Sports Writer
Sherwood W. (Scrubby) Olson, 48, of 101 Johnson St., was pronounced dead on arrival at WCA Hospital at 3 a.m. today (Sept. 15, 1973) after being stricken earlier at his home.
A well-known area sports writer, Mr. Olson had been employed at The Post-Journal for the last 20 years on a part-time basis, covering Jamestown High School exclusively and for the last 10 years covered basketball, football and track events for the school. He took most of his pwn pictures at various sports events.
He also had covered most of Section 6 basketball playoffs and was known to most Western New York coaches and Section 6 officials.
He had covered most major golf tournaments in this area since 1956.
A life-long Jamestown resident, Mr. Olson was born here Nov. 21, 1924, a son of the late Evar and Ruth Pearson Olson. A 1943 graduate of Jamestown High School, he played varsity basketball for the school.
He had been employed by the Board of Public Utilities for many years as a meter reader.
Mr. Olson was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church; the Viking and Thule Lodges.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Y. Kestler whom he married Sept. 23, 1944; a son, William M. Olson at home; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara R. Engdahl, Vicksburg, Miss., and Rebecca S. Olson at home. He was preceded in death by a brother, Orville J. Olson.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday in SS Peter and Paul Church.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home where Vigil Prayers will be led at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The additional financial assistance of the community is critical to the success of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame.
