Frank Hyde was sports editor at The Post-Journal for 35 years and in that time he did more than just cover sports. He promoted boxing events and started a youth baseball program in the Southwestern Central School area and coached a team for six years.

Hyde was named president of the National Baseball Writers Association (Minor League) and was statistician for the New York-Pennsylvania League for six years. Upon his retirement from the The Post-Journal in 1979, the NY-P League established the "Frank Hyde Award" given to the media member who does the most to publicize the league.

Before arriving in Jamestown, Hyde, who was born in Jamestown, North Dakota, was a top wrestler in high school and then wrestled professionally for three years before an injury forced his retirement.

His writing career began in Seattle and continued in Minneapolis, Billings, Montana, and Salt Lake City before he came to The Post-Journal.

After his retirement, Hyde continued to write his popular "Frankly Speaking" column and numerous features until his death on May 24, 1984.
