Englert was born in Buffalo in 1935. He attended Bishop Timon High School, the University of Buffalo and UB Dental School. He was an outstanding golfer and basketball player during his high school and collegiate career, captaining his squads at both levels.
While living in Buffalo, Karl won the Buffalo District Golf Association Junior title in 1950, was the WNY Catholic League champion in 1951 and qualified for the USGA National Junior Championship the same year.
Englert defeated his father for the Orchard Park Country Club Championship in 1955, a title he would win two more times. Also in ‘55, Karl teamed with his father to win the Buffalo District Golf Association Father/Son Championship at Lancaster.
As a member of the UB golf team, he participated in the NCAA National Championships in 1955 and 1956 and in 1958 qualified for the National Amateur Golf Tournament.
Following his graduation from UB Dental School, he served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy for two years, then opened his practice in Lakewood in 1963.
In 1964, Karl or “Doc,” as he was also known, won the Buffalo District Golf Association Individual Championship and was the runner-up the following year. He won the Western New York Amateur Championship back-to-back in 1965 and 1966.
He qualified for and played in the US Amateur Tournament in 1965 at Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Doc was a three-time Maplehurst CC champion and a six-time champ at Moon Brook CC. He also set a new amateur record at Maplehurst with a 66 card.
He won the amateur division at the Zippo Open at Bradford in 1966, captured the Lakewood Open twice and won the Higgens Memorial Best-Ball Tourney at Bartlett CC in ‘76.
Englert was a member of the Moon Brook team that won the BDGA Team Championship in 1967, 1975 and 1976.
In 1989, Doc qualified for the US Senior Open at Niagara Falls Country Club.
After 37 years of serving patients at his Lakewood dental practice, Karl and his wife, Marlene, parents of four children, retired to Florida in 2000. Still competing in the sport he loved, he won the Senior Division Tiger Point Golf Club Championship.
Dr. Karl J. Englert Jr. died in 2013 in Greenville, SC.
